Being a successful salesperson means being well-rounded in a variety of areas. It is difficult to achieve your full potential if you lack certain fundamental foundations. There are people out there who can make a good living working at a mediocre level, but if you want to become a champion salesperson, you need to put in a lot of work. There are three areas that a salesperson must become proficient in; product knowledge, selling strategies, and personality (which includes your attitude and goals). Each area is equally important and identical amounts of time must be dedicated to strengthening the sections. Product knowledge is incredibly important in any selling situation. To answer your prospect's questions and overcome their objections, you need to know the ins and outs of what you are selling. Knowing about your product also helps you better determine how to solve your prospect's needs. You never want to get caught off guard. If the prospect asks a question that you do not know the answer to, the sale can be ruined. You can prevent this from happening by consistently studying your product. Prospects like to do business with knowledgeable salespeople, so being able to quickly address their concerns is very empowering. Having all the product knowledge in the world is not going to help if you do not know how to sell. You need to learn as many tactics and strategies as possible so you can succeed in the majority of your encounters. It is critical that you know the steps of selling and what to do at each step. There are several special approaches you can take at each step so the final one, closing the sale, goes smoothly. Finally, you need to have enthusiasm for your job. Even if you can tactfully sell a product, and know all about it, you probably will not be able to close a sale if the prospect sees you as dreary and disinterested. You need to show unmitigated enthusiasm and a winning attitude at every moment. In certain cases, just having these qualities can enable you to close a sale, even if you are lacking in the other departments. After all, selling is a people business, and often what the prospect buys is not just the product, but the salesperson's presentation as well. If you can strengthen and merge all three areas, you are guaranteed to become a champion salesperson. |
