Prospecting Your Way to Riches

Written by futurebusinessideas.com

Prospecting is an important step in the sales cycle, as it is the time when you find the people who are going to buy your products. This can be difficult for many salespeople, as it sometimes involves cold contacting and awkward introductions. If you know where to look and what to say, prospecting becomes much easier, allowing you to focus more on existing customer relationships.

No matter how good your product is or how advanced your personal selling skills are, it is worthless if you cannot find the right people to present to. It is useless showing an automobile to the Amish because they have no need for it. The best prospects are people who need or strongly desire your product. Sometimes they don't even know it; they are just waiting to be given your solution.

A great way to find prospects is to go to places where you know they hang out. If you sell exercise equipment, prospecting at a gym is ideal because you already know every single person there is interested in exercising. Depending on what you sell, the newspaper can be one of your greatest tools. For example, if you sell mutual funds or investment plans, look in the newspaper for people who just had a baby, and offer to help them set up a college fund.

One of the largest sources of prospects has been sitting in front of you all your life; it is the people you know personally. This includes friends, acquaintances, local business owners, and family. Of course, when presenting your product to this group, you have to take a slightly different route than if you were to do so with a prospect you've never met before. Do not make your presentation sound like a sales pitch to a friend.

Many salespeople are not comfortable with trying to sell to people they know. If you feel that way, you should stop selling whatever your current product is. Believing in your product is an important key to success, and if you do not want to share what you sell with everybody you know, change jobs.
