Goals and Success

Written by futurebusinessideas.com

Your goals and personal measures of success are what drive you to succeed in life. For many people, simply reaching a goal is success. The purpose of goals is to reach an ultimate destination. While there should be no final success, you should always be trying to achieve more, there comes a time where you have reached a monumental point.

Refrain from letting other people influence your perception of success. Just because someone else sees being rich as success does not mean you have to (although having wealth usually fits in to most people's definition of success). You might consider yourself successful when you have helped a certain number of people to a certain extent, or become famous or widely respected. Whatever you see success as, define it without the input of others. If you are living by someone else's goals, you eventually will become unmotivated and fail.

Having your own goals is good, but if you do not believe you can achieve them, they are worthless. Many salespeople draw up a list of goals and think that they are not currently able to reach them, that maybe they will have what it takes in one, two, five years. It is critical that you face challenges with a positive mindset and a certain belief that you will overcome them. When you go in to a situation knowing that you will succeed, you already have.

The goals you set cannot be easy to complete; they must be stimulating and on the bounds of realism (but still realistic!) You need to push yourself to the limits of your capabilities. Thus, if you do not reach your goal, you actually did accomplish a lot. It is better to fall short of a bold goal than overreach a mediocre goal.

To properly set a goal, you must first state it. Think deeply about the statement, as this is the most important part. A starting date and completion date need to be included as well. Without time-frames, there is no organization or order, and the chances of you actually achieving your goal are low. Finally, have a way to measure success. If you cannot quantify the goal, how will you know when you reach it?
