Making Money with Blogs: Roadmap to Success

Written by futurebusinessideas.com

Millions of blog owners online have collaboratively written billions of blog posts, and some writers have profited heavily off their efforts. Literally anybody can make money from a blog, and it really just comes down to how well and how much you write. The great thing about blog writing is it can potentially be very lucrative and you do not even need a domain. People can host blogs on subdomains of popular blog programs like Wordpress or Typepad. However, it is much more effective to buy your own domain, mainly because it is easier for readers to return, and you have more control over your blog as a whole.

Launching your blog is the easiest part of the blogging process you will do. Before you launch your blog, you need to know what you are going to write about (or how else are you going to choose a name?) Do not pick a topic just because it is highly searched for or very profitable; instead, write about something you love. Make sure that there is lots of flexibility so you have almost an infinite amount of content to write about, and that there is a readership for your topic. For example, it would be unwise to write only about staplers, because not many people are interested in staplers, there is a limited amount of content you can produce off the subject, and there are no affiliate programs (that will be covered more shortly) related to staplers. A better subject to pick would be office supplies in general, because then you can talk about printers, computers, stationary, etc. Find something you love, research if people are interested in your passion, and then write about it.

Make sure to write on your blog at least once a day. Daily content not only encourages readers to keep coming back, but it gives search engines lots of content to index. Eventually, when you have pages and pages of rich content, search engines may consider you an "authority site" and you will rise greatly in the ranks for your targeted keywords (which are basically the topics and subjects you write about). If you consistently write good content on your blog, eventually you will be successful, no matter how long it takes.

There are several techniques to "speed up" on the road of success. Link building is the fastest way to raise your search engine position. An easy way to build links is to submit articles you write to article directories like EzineArticles, GoArticles, ArticleDashboard, and IdeaMarketers. Another way is to make comments on related blogs and put your link in (many blog commenting areas have an area to put your URL). If you do no link building at all, and only focus on content, links will grow naturally because people will find you interesting and link to you. The technique of writing interesting, viral content in order to lure people into linking to you is called link baiting.

Finally, the part you have been waiting for; how to make money with your blog. The two main, legitimate ways (so no pop-ups) are PPC advertising and affiliate promotion. PPC advertising is putting a program like AdSense on your blog, and when people click an ad, you get money. It is important to play around with the position and color of your ads until you find a format that gets the most click-throughs. The other, more lucrative yet difficult option is affiliate promotion. With this technique, you try to sell other business' products, and get commission based on sales. It is harder to make money with this option because you have to convince your readers to actually buy something, but if you get a large amount of traffic and have a loyal readership, affiliate promotion can be much more lucrative than PPC. Part of the difficulty with affiliate promotion is finding the right affiliate program; one that you believe is the most appealing and pays the most commission. It is better to sacrifice commission for appeal, because getting five $15 sales a week is better than getting one $30 sale a week.

If you do choose to start a blog, be prepared to wait months before seeing any real money. There are people who have worked months before seeing their first check, so do not give up if the business starts out slow. Just keep writing, link building, and promoting, and eventually you will hit easy street.
