Of course you need to get a website up and going. If your business is an Internet business then this is a no brainer. Don't be afraid to spend a few dollars to get a nice looking website up and you should do some research on SEO "search engine optimization" before you get started on your website. SEO is the means by which you get your website positioned optimally in the search engines.

Local Community Promotions

If your small business is serving your local community then take out some small ads in your local papers advertising your website. There are other things that you can do in your local community to advertise but they all take some time to produce results, so be persistent. Check into having some custom promotional t-shirts made online, because now with new digital printing technology, it is cheaper than ever before to have done.

Make and Distribute Fliers

Another idea is to go to Kinkos and have some nice looking fliers printed up. The next step is to take those fliers around to local homes and businesses and plunk them on their driveway in a ziplock bag that is weighted down with a small stone. Find newspaper machines open them up and stick a flier in each newspaper and do the same with the magazines on the racks at local coffee shops. Though don't go over the top and get on everyone's nerves, if you only live in a small town it's often better to ask first before posting fliers.
