Good and Bad Business Marketing Strategies

Written by futurebusinessideas.com

Running a small business during good economic times can be difficult enough but doing it in an economic slump means that it will be even tougher. It's learn as you go and failure rates are high but, if you are persistent, you will find things that work. One thing that you are going to have to remember is that results often take time and it does cost money to promote any business.

Get it Up

No matter if your business is an Internet business or serving your local community, you are going to have to get a website up and going. Take the time to research to see what you can do to your website to get it optimal page rankings in the online search engines. It's called SEO which stands for "search engine optimization"

Do NOT be tempted to take short-cuts with your business, only charlatans operate this way:

When you are promoting your business, do not pad your portfolio. People do research to see if all that you say or show is legit. For instance, if you are starting a home remodeling business, do not go out and take some pictures of yourself standing in front of several multi-million dollar homes shaking someone's hand. You may dupe a few people this way, which is fine for a fast buck, but your reputation will be ruined forever if the truth comes out.

B.S. works in the short-term, but if you want to make it big you will never get anywhere by using the above tactics and posting false pictures on your site with the caption "another satisfied client".

Taking the number of years that you have been in the business and doubling it may seem like a good idea, but you are far better being honest in the long-run, or not mentioning how long you have been up and running if you feel it isn't long enough.

Don't try to fudge up what you have to offer to make your business look bigger and more successful than it actually is. For instance, if you are running a tour guide service, offering helicopter excursions and telling customers your helicopter is in the shop every time they phone will just get you a bad reputation. There's no point telling folks you can do things when you can't, if you want to add extra services go to school and learn new skills, or team up with other businesses who can offer services in your name.

Misrepresentation is a Bad Word

All of the ideas listed above are analogies and concepts listed to make a point. When you are starting out in a small business you are at a disadvantage, because you are new and are going up against more well established competition. But taking short-cuts isn't the answer if you want a truly successful business, despite what shoddy e-books and bogus marketing advisers might tell you. Don't let anyone tell you that misrepresenting yourself is right, just because no one is being defrauded as such doesn't mean you aren't lying to them, and customers or clients are nowhere near as stupid as some crappy marketing guides will have you believe.
